Biography of Friedensreich Hundertwasser
|
Born as Friederich Stowasser in Vienna, Austria in 1928, he was ten years old when the Germans annexed Austria in 1938. Raised in the Jewish faith by his widowed mother they lived perilously during the Nazi occupation of Austria in World War II. Many of his relatives died during the Holocaust. During this time he withdrew into a fantasyland of artwork, using nature as his motif. He entered art school in 1948 and then quit after only three months so he could travel instead. His philosophy was to humanize architecture by melding architecture with nature. Not a licensed architect, he was known as an "architect doctor." His colorful works today attract students worldwide to visit and study such unique designs as a public toilet in New Zealand, apartment buildings in Germany and Austria and a heating plant in Austria. He rebelled against the formal linear design of the common apartment building and promoted the philosophy that an individual tennant had the right to design their own living space so that it could seen that and individual lived inside, not just another tennant. Quite a famous rebel.
