I am a certified Health and Physical Education teacher (Pennsylvania & New York) and an Olympic Games & Sport Historian (BS, MAT, Ph.d/abd). I collect books and posters on the Olympic Games and all sports subjects and developed one of the nation's largest private research collections. The overflow from this collection became my rare book business (HARVEY ABRAMS-BOOKS) in 1979.
My Master's degree thesis was on the History of the United States Olympic Wrestling Team from 1896 to 1920. My Doctoral dissertation is on the 1904 Olympic Games in St. Louis.
A frustrated kid in an elite high school I was just one of thousands at Central High School in Philadelphia. It was my college experience that defined my athletic career. A manager for the football and gymnastic teams, an outfielder for freshman baseball with no future of playing, I found wrestling -- a sport that did not exist in Philadelphia schools. I started to wrestle in my sophmore year at Penn State University (118 & 126) and wrestled five varsity matches before I graduated. Olympic freestyle became my passion and I tried out for the US Olympic team in 1972, 1976, 1980 and 1984 (125.5 & 136.5).
As part of my academic and historical interests I started to collect wrestling and Olympic books -- then posters and memorabilia in the 1980's. I started my college career in architecture and left quickly when I found out how much engineering was required in Penn State's five year program. But I never lost my passion in art and through the years and have designed and published four posters as a graphic artist. In addition I have done the layout and design of brochures, catalogs, flyers, newsletters, etc.
As an historian I have published numerous articles in journals and publications such as chapters in books and encyclopedias. Last year I was on CNN International and have been interviewed for many media outlets including the Philadelphia Inquirer, Orlando Sentinal, San Francisco Chronicle, Denver Post, Washington Post, NBC Today, and others. As an historical consultant I do research and writing on a fee basis for such clients as the US Olympic Committee, Sports Illustrated, ESPN, Whittle Communications and others. As a rare book dealer I do evaluations and appraisals of individual books, posters, medals and memorabilia as well as complete collections. Having lived and taught in Germany for five years I speak German and French (neither fluently) and try to learn a bunch of others (Italian, Latin, Greek, Russian). In 2001 I was the founder of the International Institute for Sport and Olympic History, a Pennsylvania non-profit educational corporation. We plan to build a Library and Museum for the History of Sport, Physical Education, Recreation, Dance, Sport in Art and the Olympic Games. SO -- if you have material to sell or give away - please let me know! Consider donating your material to the IISOH and get a tax deduction -- but never, never throw this stuff away! |
