To increase your knowledge
of Personal Safety & Self Defense

Mr. Harvey Abrams
BS., MAT, Ph.D./abd
former Instructor
Pennsylvania State University
University Park, PA

As a guest speaker I bring extensive experience as a personal defense
Instructor to your location for a one day event. Short presentations are
either 60 or 75 minutes -- the regularly scheduled classroom hour at your school.
Universities, public schools, organizations, groups, retirees -- any age group.

Longer presentations can be 2 hours in length.
The longest presentation is a full school day with multiple
presentations in different classrooms, including Physical Education
classes where students can also perform or practice techniques.

Large presentations can be made in auditoriums or gymnasiums
to accomodate hundreds of attendees at one time.

The Presentation:
There is great flexibility in the presentation -- no two are exactly alike. I invite the attendees to ask questions, raise concerns and participate as volunteers for certain demonstrations. Most presentations are given to seated attendees in classrooms, dorm study lounges or forum-style rooms. Attendees are seated and the presentation is in lecture format. You may also chose to have the presentation in a gymnasium where attendees are in sports clothes and can physically participate, as in a regular Physical Education class.

The contents of my presentations always include the Philosphy of Self Defense, Rules of Self Defense, Psychology and Self Defense, demonstrations of various forms of self defense such as Judo, Aikido, Karate and Kung-fu. All presentations include the Law and Self Defense. Several physical examples of techniques are taught with audience participation -- which is strictly controlled and voluntary. No extreme physical activity takes place unless the presentation is in a Physical Education class with wrestling mats provided for protection.

Due to the nature of my presentations -- there is always a buzz of interest at the end. I am frequently surrounded by attendees who bombard me with questions, concerns, stories, and always with intense enthusiasm. For this reason, I stay after each presentation to speak with as many people as possible -- however this is dependant upon your schedule. If the setting is in school -- I do not wish to interfere with the daily schedule. HOWEVER, when scheduling my presentation it might be good to consider the possibility of follow-up in several classrooms or arrange for me to sit in a lounge in order to talk with those who are enthused.

My Background:
I am a Physical Education teacher, certified in Pennsylvania and New York States since 1971. I have taught every grade level from kindergarten to grade 13 in public schools in the United States and Germany, and in two universities: Penn State University and Southeast Missouri State University. My sport is wrestling and I lettered at Penn State (1968-1971). My career continued until 1984 when I wrestled in the US Olympic Trials 1972, 1976, 1980 and in 1984 I retired as an active athlete. Because of the Vietnam war I trained in several martial arts out of fear that I, a small guy, would end up on the ground as a tunnel rat. Some of my training during this period of time is classified and is not included in any of my presentations. Contrary to rumor I am not in the CIA.

I strongly believe that every high school and university student should have a course in self defense. It has been my professional experience that I am ahead of the times with my philosophy -- I have long advocated wrestling for girls. In 1974-75 I tried to promote wrestling instruction for girls at Neshaminy High School in Southeast Pennsylvania. At that time I was called a pervert by a school board member. My reasoning was simple -- if girls knew how to wrestle then it would be impossible to rape any female who had such training. Today we have Title IX, wrestling teams for girls are common and women wrestle in the Olympic Games.

My presentation will not make anyone proficient in self defense. However, the attendee leaves with tremendous knowledge of what is possible, and with a few simple techniques that might -- or might not -- work if used. Most importantly the attendee will learn what is possible and begin the long road to learning real self-defense -- an understanding of what to do, and what NOT to do.
