NOTES:
To compile this information I first used a mimeographed class list called Directory Of The 226th Class Of Central High School which contained names, addresses and telephone numbers of the 16 homerooms (called Books). This list has been with my yearbook in storage since 1967 and is like new. I seem to recall (and I may be wrong) that this was issued in our senior year. It is hand typed with a change of font towards the end. Some attempts to correct errors were done at that time as can be seen from the typography.
I then cross-referenced this list with the Yearbook and the Graduation program from June 19, 1967.
The differences in each source are noted throughout this web page with symbols such as an asterix, parenthesis and brackets.
As an historian I always strive for accuracy, of course. Here are my observations:
- The Yearbook has two useful sources of information on each student, their photo with their name and a brief personal summary that was printed on different pages, on heavier paper, as bound inserts. In some cases the summary gives greater detail on the names. All variations of names or other details from the Yearbook are included in the list above inside parenthesis.
- In some cases the Yearbook was deficient. There might be a photo, but no personal information, and alternately there might be personal information for a student but no photo.
- Finally -- some names on the Directory List are not in the Yearbook at all, and some names were in the Commencement program and nowhere else.
KEY TO THE DIRECTORY:
- The list of names on this page comes from the mimeographed Directory Of The 226th Class Of Central High School.
-
If the name in the Yearbook was different than the list above -- it is included in (parenthesis) to show the source.
-
Some names on the list are not in the yearbook -- but they are listed above with an asterix (*) in front of their name.
-
If I have received information from classmates with nicknames or variations -- it is included in [brackets].
-
Variations on names from the Commencement booklet of June 19, 1967 are included in {braces}.
-
The boys NOT listed in the Commencement booklet are identified with a question mark (?) in front of their name.
-
Deceased classmates are in BOLD RED.
WHO IS IN THE 226?
I used three sources of information to compile this list, and each source had some defects.
Some boys in the Yearbook are not on the mimeographed class list, and they are included at the end of this compilation because I have no way of knowing with any accuracy which book (homeroom) they were actually in, although the books were alphabetically ordered.
I recall an academic document that ranked all class members and it stated that the class had 482 members, but my memory could be defective.
My numbers above show 498 class members, however some of the boys may have not graduated with the class for various reasons.
It is also possible that the Class Directory which I used was from the beginning of our senior year, not the end, and some students may have withdrawn from school.
In the Commencement booklet from June 19, 1967 the names of 461 students are listed.
This leaves 37 names unaccounted for in my listing above. The boys NOT listed in the Commencement booklet are identified with a question mark (?) in front of their name. The omission of their names from the commencement booklet, however, may have been due to clerical errors or as a punishment for such offenses as an unpaid library fine -- I have no way of knowing.
Of great interest was the finding of two students, Alan Michael Deitch and Paul J. Fioravanti who were listed in the Commencement booklet but nowhere else.
I have not been able to determine if #209 and #210 are the same person (Kain).
Because the class was large, four decades have elapsed, I have not been close to the alumni association and I have not followed the paths of my classmates, I do not know at this time who did not graduate or why their names are not in the Commencement booklet.
For all these reasons above I cannot determine with accuracy the actual number of students in the graduating class.
As a result I have chosen to identify the number "482" as students in the class until I have more comprehensive data.
