Library and Museum
This is a naming opportunity for the donor to have a perpetual identification with classical history with an emphasis on sport and dance of the Ancient Romans. The endowment could be named by the donor in honor of or in memory of someone special such as a family member, teacher or coach -- with the final approval of the IISOH Board of Directors.
The endowment becomes a permanent trust fund -- with the entire donation being used as the principal to be invested by the Institute. The, perpetual funding will come from the quarterly earned interest to be used exclusively for the development of the ANCIENT ROMAN SPORT & DANCE collections in both the Library and Museum.
Cash donations IN ANY AMOUNT can be made at any time to the ANCIENT ROMAN SPORT endowment. These donations will supplement the endowment and increase the investment so that more funding is available to develop the collection each year.
The Board of Directors would like to thank every donor for their support through recognition in our publications and web site. Donations over $250 will be recognized with engraved patio bricks to be set into the outdoor cafe terraces and walkways winding through the sculpture gardens. Larger donations will be recognized with larger tablets in marble, granite or bronze and will adorn various walls of honor both inside and outside the buildings.
Ancient Rome, the Colosseum, Gladiators and History....
Classical studies are very important in our mission to study sport throughout history. The ancient Greeks had their Olympic Games and various other festivals. The ancient Romans had different forms of public spectacles, sport, physical education and dance. Most famous are the gladitorial combats and games held in arenas like the Roman Colosseum.
Here you can view some nice photographs of the ancient Roman Colosseum.
Formally known as the Flavian Amphitheater it was constructed between 72 and 80 C.E. and was the site of gladitorial combat sponsored by Roman nobles and emperors. The last gladitorial games were held there early in the fifth century (404 CE, when emperor Theodosius II outlawed gladitorial games). One excellent web site to read about the Roman Colosseum is at this Italian website: THE COLOSSEUM -- a site on the Roman amphitheatre.

The IISOH has no plan to build a replica of the Roman Colosseum on the grounds of the Institute, however land will be available in case construction of a replica would be made possible through a large donation. For example -- a replica of one side of the Colosseum was constructed for the film Gladiator -- and then digitally reproduced to appear that the entire building was in the movie. We would allow such a facility to be built at the Institute -- if it were made permanent and available for future use. The entire cost would have to be through donations.
Smaller models of the Flavian Amphitheater are planned for use inside the Museum. Artwork which depicts gladitorial combat, dancing, chariot racing, and models of ancient buildings similar to the Colosseum are all eagerly desired for the collections. Roman statuary of ancient Greek athletes will be used extensively throughout the Sculpture Gardens.

These lists are not comprehensive and are limited only by your imagination!
We seek everything, in every language, related to ancient Roman Sport, physical education, dance, and architecture of amphitheaters in order to develop the most comprehensive collection in the world. That will be quite a challenge considering the existance of such fantastic collections as the Vatican Museum and Roman National Museum. We will have to be content with high quality replicas of artwork rather than the originals.
