Biography of David Hockney

David Hockney was born on July 9, 1937 in Bradford, Yorkshire, Great Britain. He is the son of Kenneth and Laura Hockney and has four siblings, Paul, Philip, Margaret and John. He studied art at the Bradford School of Art from 1953 to 1957 and then spent two years as a hospital orderly in order to fulfill his National Service duty. In 1959 he began studying at the Royal College of Art in London. While he was a student he met some of the other artists whose works became part of the edition Olympia series including R.B. Kitaj, Allen Jones and Peter Phillips. During his career Hockney has mastered a wide variety of techniques and has created massive works of art consisting of as many as 50 canvases in works that are 15 x 40 feet in size. He uses a wide variety of artist tools to create his works including oil and acrylic paints, pen and ink, and photography from polaroids to digitals to assist in his creations. A prolific artist his entire career he has traveled extensively and has homes in Great Britain and the United States.
